View Full Version : Cell phone Aviation weather data

August 4th 05, 12:19 PM
YAWS (Yet another Weather Site) is accessible from
WAP phones: http://activitae.com/wap
PDA/Smartphones: http://activitae.com/pda
Read about it: http://activitae.com/yaws

At the risk of appearing to spam, kindly allow me to re-publicise this
free site, bereft of both adverts and pop-ups, to help aviation data
remain free to GA users. The data currently derives from the US National
Weather Service. But some also comes form the US Air Force in Europe.

Whilst aviation weather data is universal some aspects of the site tend
to be a bit Europe centric, I'll admit, but I would be happy if others
found the site useful too! Currently, there are users around the world
including a number from .af.mil domains!

Hi everybody.

I just want to apologize for being a horses-ass on this newsgroup and
promise not to repeat my childish antics in the future. (Hopefully I can
keep this promise.)

I have been experiencing some personal problems and and took it out on the
newsgroup.

One of the reasons I have been so petulant is that I washed out of basic
flight training due to my poor piloting skills.

LOL at the impostor. Some people just can't stand to hear criticism.

These are probably the same pilots ruining it for the majority.

Amazing. Certainly accepted on my part.

LOL. Of course you realize that no apology was offered from the real
Skylune. Nothing to apologize for. I am an American, and can express my
opinions, just like you can.

Of course, unlike some of the Whackos in the group, I have not ever made
personal threats, have not threatened to break laws, and will never do so.
There are legal, political methods to rein in the abuses of certain GA
pilots. Sad that your industry will not police its own.....

The people in this group who make threats and brag about how easy it is to
violate FARs are psychos: scary how easily virtually anyone can get
his/her ticket. This newsgroup, I-Pilot, and others that I monitor
acknowledge that there are arrogant, marginally skilled, and some very
stupid pilots. And thats pilots talking about other pilots. The topic
covering the stupid pilot antics at Oshkosh is a good example.

So, goodbye for now. I'm going to the Docket management system to
encourage an expansion of ADIZs to cover areas that I live in, near NYC
and Boston. There are also some EPA fuel handling violations at one of
the local airports near my summer home. I'll be giving the EPA's
northeast center a call so they can check it out. And, hopefully, fuel
prices will really sky-rocket to keep economic pressure on the industry.
Good luck.

Look at the message headers. They are clearly from different origins.
Almost certainly the apology was a hoax.

I'd look at the poster IP data in the header to see if I could match it up
to any other newsgroup regular (out of curiosity...I wouldn't report them
for the fraudulent use of Usenet, not in this case :) ), but Google Groups
doesn't show that part of the header, and for some odd reason posts from
" aren't being downloaded or stored by my news
reader. :)

Huh? The "apology" was an obvious, underhanded forgery in retaliation for
his expressing unpopular ideas, and he immediately identified it as such.

Thanks! I had used this sometime ago but didn't bookmark it on my Treo.
I just added it, used it a bit, and will be using it in the future for
TAFs and METARs. Fills my need perfectly and the price is right.
Thanks much.

What's this guy done to generate such animosity?

Talkabout uses Supernews, the other came directly from Supernews. Its
not unforseeable someone has access to either or both...

Since both hide the origin IP, claiming or disclaiming proves nothing...

What's he done lately? I wouldn't know.

Sounds like a case of the pot calling the kettle black. All that coming
from a GA washout.

Perhaps you would be kind enough to explain how Outlook and Outlook
Express users can view the message header fields.

If I'm not mistaken, signing up for TALKanything is slightly more
troublesome than Google Groups. They don't give a rats patoot about TOS
(Terms of Service) AUPs (Acceptable Use Policy) or Usenet Newsgroup
Charters either. ie. you can get away with just about anything you want
to do/say in a newsgroup, as they don't respond to complaints about
their users... Google at least shows the originating IP address...

Haven't read news in Outlook. In Outlook Express, it's simply a matter of
choosing the "File/Properties..." menu item while the message is selected,
and then looking at the "Details" tab in that dialog.

For Outlook, you might have to use the "View/Options..." menu item instead;
that's where you'd find message headers for email messages anyway.

Interestingly, your NNTP-Posting-Host field has been obfuscated. Mine no
longer exists, nor do some other folks. It might be that Google isn't
stripping out the field, but rather Supernews is. Presumably they have some
other way of tracking the user; probably by the message ID.

I haven't looked for an IP address in a Usenet post in a long time. It
appears that over the past X years, there's been a shift in how those fields
are created. In particular, it appears to be very difficult to tell one
Supernews user from another, which is a shame since Supernews provides
Usenet NNTP service to a VERY large number of ISPs (including my own).

Yes, but "spouting off" to people of opposing viewpoints is a crucial
element of democracy, however unwelcome it is to those opponents.

No it isn't. Intellegent discourse is the crucial element, as is the
=freedom= to engage in it (which brings with it the freedom to spout off).

Important difference.

Outlook Express, Outlook for some reason I've never been able to understand
has no news reader.

In the quick view window...
Right click the message subject. Select properties and then details tab.

If you read it in a window by itself properties is under the file menu.

True, but the target group's assessment of the merits of a protester's
discourse is seldom flattering, or reliable. I've seen only a subset of
Skylune's posts, but among those, the level of logical coherency and factual
support strikes me as average or above for political discussions here, and
the level of personal abrasiveness likewise seems no worse than average. I
don't think it harms us to be exposed to occasional dissent of that sort.

I may be getting the drift. Like, as far as we know, this guy could be
annoying his neighbors with his jet-ski, or snow-mobile, or dirt-bike, but
he ignores the fun things he does that lower the quality of life for beings
around him and focuses on the folks who fly?

Might he be a closet hypocrite?

The problem is that "Skylune" is a washout, with about 16 hours of
flight time. He acts as if he is an authority and comes across as the
proverbial turd in the punchbowl.

He has no constructive ideas and states that his mission is to make it
as hard on GA pilots as possible. IMHO, that is about like Osama Bin
Laden posting on a US political NG.

Right. Quite the contrary actually.

Who was it that said, "keep your friends close, and your enemies
closer."?

Worst case, 'loon will sensitize airman to the views of non airman.
In fact, his Usenet persona may be a sock-puppet created just for that
purpose.

Be that as it may, hostile actions evoke anger and hostility in return. That's
where the animosity comes from.

There's no indication of that, and it's probably irrelevant. What he *has* done
is state repeatedly that what we are doing is entirely to dangerous for
amateurs, we should not be allowed to do it, and he is going to do everything he
possibly can to make sure that we are stopped. He also expresses delight in any
general problem we may have.

Something attributed to Sun Tzu that was never spoken by him. I wish
people would stop perpetuating that absurd saying.
